Safeguarding & Prevent
1. Commitment
We have a duty of care to every learner. Although most of our learners are adults, some may be vulnerable, and learners aged 16–17 may attend first aid courses. We take all reasonable steps to keep learners safe from harm, abuse, neglect and radicalisation, and we act on concerns.
2. Responsibilities
- Designated Safeguarding Lead: [NAME, role, contact]. Deputy: [NAME].
- All trainers and centre staff are screened in line with BS 7858 before appointment [CONFIRM] and receive safeguarding and Prevent awareness training on induction and at least every two years.
- Every member of staff must report a concern about a learner’s welfare, or about the behaviour of a colleague towards a learner, to the Designated Safeguarding Lead the same day.
3. Prevent
Our SIA courses include counter-terrorism content. Staff are alert to signs that a learner may be drawn into terrorism or may express extremist views, and understand that discussion of terrorism in class is normal and expected. Genuine concerns are reported to the Designated Safeguarding Lead, who decides whether to refer to the police Prevent team or the local authority. We promote respect for the law, individual liberty and mutual respect for others in everything we deliver.
4. Reporting and referral
- Concerns are recorded in writing with dates, facts and the action taken, and held securely by the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
- Where a learner is at immediate risk, staff call 999. Otherwise the Designated Safeguarding Lead decides on referral to Nottinghamshire adult or children’s social care, or to the police.
- Learners can raise a concern about their own safety or another learner’s with any member of staff, or confidentially by emailing the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
- Allegations against staff are reported to the Director and, where a child or vulnerable adult is involved, to the Local Authority Designated Officer.
